The Clarence J. Glacken papers, 1929-1981, consist primarily of correspondence, course materials, lecture notes, articles, and administrative memoranda produced by Clarence J. Glacken while a faculty member in the Department of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley. Essays and notes documenting his early growth as a student and his service in the United States Army during WWII are also prominent. Of particular interest are manuscript materials from his two major published works: The Great Loochoo, and Traces on the Rhodian Shore, as well as notes for an unfinished sequel to Traces. An assortment of materials highlighting Glacken's leadership in professional associations, including his service as editor of the monograph series of the Association of American Geographers, are also included, as are photographs and negatives from his research in the Ryukyu Islands and Norway.
